Introduction to Chemistry

Chemistry or sometimes called as “the central science,” because it bridges physics with other natural sciences, such as geology and biology. Chemistry is the study of the properties, composition, and transformation of matter. Because of this, chemistry can explain many different phenomena in the world, from the ordinary to the bizarre. Understanding chemistry is the key to understanding the world as we know it.

What is glucose?

Glucose comes from the Greek word for "sweet" or you may know as "blood sugar", is the key to keeping the mechanisms of the body to work. People get glucose from bread, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. You need food to create the energy that helps to let your body function and keep you alive. But if you don't balance your intakes of glucose, it can have permanent and serious effects it has on normal functioning.

Importance of glucose

The reason why glucose is important to us, it is because our body couldn't function properly. The human body requires energy to perform metabolism and in order to have that is to eat or drink that have glucose in it. Glucose also serves as a building block for structural molecules of the body. If our body dropped a significant amount of sugar in blood, it may cause symptoms of hypoglycemia relatively quickly. So it is why glucose important to us.

Use/s of glucose

Glucose is used to treat people with very low blood sugar or known as hypoglycemia, most often in people with diabetes mellitus. People who cannot eat because of illness, trauma, or other medical condition is usually fed by food that contains glucose to provide carbohydrate calories. It is sometimes given to people that are sick and drinks too much. Glucose may also be used to treat hyperkalemia (high levels of potassium in your blood).

Structure of Glucose

It's chemical formula is C6H12O6 and this empirical formula is shared by other sugars called hexoses (6 carbon sugars).
